The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating an alleged bias incident, in which a swastika was discovered inscribed on the wall of a synagogue in Borough Park, sources told JP.
Borough Park Shomrim Patrol responded to a call on Sunday evening at around 7:00p.m. of a reported swastika inside Yoka Shul, located at 1243 55th street in Brooklyn, NY. The coordinator who arrived at the scene immediately alerted the NYPD.
As police arrived to the scene, higher ranking officials of the local precinct were called in. After a preliminary review, the Hate Crime Taks Force was alerted. They are currently investigating the incident as a hate crime, police sources told JP.
Several members of the Shul expressed their dismay at the horrific act, in particular as we are just three days away of the high holy days.
Police believe the incident had occurred some time Sunday morning, before it was discovered in the evening by members of the Shul.
“It’s very concerning that just days after holding a major press conference on antisemitism at City Hall, another hateful incident took place in the heart of the Jewish community in Borough Park,” Councilman David Greenfield told JP. “Clearly, more needs to be done to stop these attacks from happening.”
Councilman Brad Lander told JP in a statement, “I’m sick and tired of anti-Semitic hate crimes in Boro Park, in Brooklyn, and around the world. Carving a swastika into the wall of a shul whose rabbi is a Holocaust survivor is truly disgusting, and most be aggressively investigated and prosecuted. As we turn toward Rosh Hashanah, I pray for a strong NYPD response, and a new year without such hateful acts.”
